What goes up must come down, including (eventually) staircases. Some staircases will decay after centuries of use, some will be destroyed or damaged, and still others will be remodeled to suit the homeowner’s preferred style. Remodeling a staircase can be tricky, because beauty is important but functionality is vital. If you’re remodeling a staircase, be sure to check out the tips, tricks, and ideas that we’ve compiled below.
Remodeling a Staircase
Add a runner. If you often slip and slide on your stairs, or if you’re tired of listening to your family clatter up and down the staircase, consider installing a runner. In addition to adding softness and warmth, the runner will minimize the sound of footsteps, provide friction to reduce slips, and also add beauty depending on the color and pattern you choose.
Utilize the space underneath. If you’re short on storage, take advantage of the unused space beneath your staircase (if its location allows for it). You could add hidden storage in the form of a small room, handy drawers, or beautiful shelves.
Focus on safety. If your staircase has a poor structural condition, wobbly rails, or uneven stairs, you might need to perform a total overhaul. Work with an experienced contractor to ensure that you follow applicable building codes and are able to create a very safe, secure staircase.
Silence squeaks. If your stairs moan and squeak as you walk up and down them, you will need to tighten them if you wish to hush them up. To do this, you will either need to fasten blocks or brackets underneath the stairs or on the topside. Test the step, identify where the noise is coming from within the step, and then refasten the tread. If it squeaks along the front of the tread, refasten the tread to its riser. If it squeaks along the back or on one side, reattach the tread to the appropriate stringer.
Consider every detail. Staircases offer a lot of possibilities as far as interior design goes, so be sure to explore your options. You’ll need to think about the risers, the treads, the railings, the posts, the shape of the staircase itself, and the possibility of a runner. You could add tile to the risers or paint them a contrasting color. You could create a small landing, where your dog can perch to look out over the living room. You could create a spiral staircase or add drama with wider steps and bigger posts at the bottom of the staircase. You could even add lights. Embrace the possibilities!
