Planning a bathroom renovation? You’re not alone—bathrooms are the most common remodeling projects undertaken by homeowners each year. When you consider how much time we spend in bathrooms and how important they are to our everyday comfort, it’s not surprising that we would choose to invest our time and money in them. However, remodeling a bathroom can be quite pricey, so if you want to make it a worthwhile investment, you can’t just focus on yourself; you also need to consider what future homebuyers will think of your renovation plans. If you need some help or you’re not sure where to start, just scroll down! Our bathroom remodeling tips are just what you need.
Bathroom Remodeling Tips
CHOOSE YOUR SURFACES WISELY. Because bathrooms handle a lot of water and moisture, the surfaces you choose for your floors, walls, countertops, and sinks must be strong and efficient. Although aesthetics are important, functionality should be your #1 concern. Porcelain tile, enamel-on-steel sinks, stainless steel sinks, and granite and quartz countertops are all popular and durable options.
HIDE THE TOILET. Toilets aren’t exactly sculptural masterpieces, and they go hand-in-hand with privacy. So if you’re designing a large master bathroom, consider stowing the toilet away in a small room-within-a-room. You could also conceal it using a half-wall or a dresser.
FOCUS ON THE SHOWER. Bathtubs have become less and less popular over the years, and these days most homeowners rarely make use of them. So unless you really love bathtubs or you don’t have a bathtub in any other room of the house, focus on the shower instead. If you have the money, consider splurging on an extra large shower, steam generators, and/or his and her showerheads. Also, if the shower area is large enough, you can design it so that a door isn’t even necessary (which can save you quite a bit of money).
GO GREEN. These days, you’re more likely than ever to have the option of choosing water-efficient toilets, shower heads, and faucets. If you can afford the initial expense, go for it! You’ll save water, save money, and make your home more attractive to future buyers.
ADD COUNTER SPACE. So many couples enter a bathroom renovation thinking that they want a double sink. Double sinks are great, but what most of these couples really want is extra counter space. If you add additional counter space but don’t pop in that extra sink, you’ll save money on the sink, faucet, and extra plumbing you would have needed to purchase.
PLAN FOR THE UNEXPECTED. This tip applies to nearly all home renovation projects, but it’s especially apt when you’re remodeling a bathroom. You never know when you might find hidden water damage, a leaky shower pan, a running toilet, or issues with vent stacks. Tack an extra 10-15% onto your budget to account for these unexpected complications. Then, if you’re lucky and and nothing goes wrong, you can save the money or use it to splurge on some especially nice bathroom accessories.
I hope these bathroom remodeling tips come in handy now and during future renovations. Good luck!
